Theatre, Cinema and Other Performances
Outside the tourist arena, scheduled performances of the arts are rare, but that's hardly surprising considering how much goes on all the time in public. Despite stiff competition from satellite TV, Kathmandu's several cinemas , showing the latest Indian blockbusters in Hindi, are still popular. The easiest ones to get to are the Jai Nepal Chitra Ghar, one block east of the Royal Palace entrance, and the Bishwa Jyoti on Jamal. Showtime is generally noon, 3pm and 6pm daily and tickets cost just pennies. Some Thamel restaurants show pirated Hollywood videos and laser discs to bring in customers. They're often of poor quality, but they're free. For recent English-language releases on a bigger screen (but still video disc), go to Kathmandu Mini Vision in the Kathmandu Plaza building at the east end of Lal Durbar (tel 253140). In the high seasons, the Kathmandu Guest House hosts slide shows by visiting authors and adventurers. The rafting companies do their own promotional shows. The Indigo Gallery sometimes does impromptu slide shows on fine-art subjects - email indigo@wlink.com.np to get on their mailing list.
