Culture Shows
Music and dance are essential parts of Nepali culture, and perhaps nowhere more so than in Kathmandu, where neighbourhood festivals and parades (not to mention weddings) are an almost daily occurrence. Touring other regions of the country, you'll encounter other, markedly different styles of music and dance, and while it's more fun to see these performances in their native context, it might be worth checking out a culture show before you leave the capital to get a sampler of Nepal's folk and performing arts. Several Thamel restaurants (notably Green Leaves and Nepalese Kitchen) host free regular folk music performances in the high season. Most of the deluxe hotels do pricey dinner shows. Infrequent cultural evenings are held at the Royal Nepal Academy, off Kamaladi, although they're not well publicized. The following groups do regularly scheduled shows. Admission is about Rs300; call for times. Everest Cultural Society , at the Hotel de l'Annapurna, Durbar Marg (tel 228787). Conventional folk performances, nightly in high season. Hotel Vajra , Bijeshwari (tel 271545). The Vajra 's resident Kala Mandapa ensemble does a superb classical Nepali dance and dance-drama programme every Tuesday evening. New Himalchuli Cultural Group , at a space near the Bluebird Supermarket in Lazimpath (tel 415280). Nightly folk performances in high season.
