Kathmandu Bars and Nightclubs

Bars and Nightclubs

Kathmandu's nightlife scene is growing. The area around the Kathmandu Guest House has mutated into quite a throbbing little quarter in the evenings, with duelling sound systems blaring across the alleyways, noisy bands of revellers looking for action, and the cops and the riksha wallahs waiting outside for closing time.

Bars in Thamel and Freak Street serve up beer, improvised cocktails and music. As with the tourist restaurants, they're more like a Nepali's imagined idea of what a bar must be like than the real thing, but on the whole they're fine for meeting, mixing and prolonging an otherwise short evening. Many have "happy hours" in the early evening, which generally means free popcorn. In the high season, bars often keep serving until the wee hours behind drawn curtains and locked doors. Don't forget to warn your innkeeper if you think you're going to stay out late, or you could get locked out. Reputations rise and fall from season to season, but the establishments listed appear to be in for the duration.

travellers, and a few young Nepali men hoping to hook up with Western women. A handful of fancier nightclubs elsewhere in the city attract a more diverse clientele - Nepali men and women, expats, upmarket tourists - and are busiest at weekends. They stay open late, and typically have a cover charge.

Snooker and pool are becoming quite popular with young Nepalis. A number of nightspots have tables, which provide congenial common ground for foreigners and Nepalis to mix.
