Breakfast, Lunch and Snack Places
You can't beat Kathmandu's cafes for breakfast or lunch on a warm day. Most restaurants have some outdoor seating, but the places listed below stand out. Likewise, there are countless bakeries in Thamel - all "German", and all pretty interchangeable. And just about every restaurant offers set breakfasts, which usually represent great value for money (especially if you like eggs). Bakery Cafe , Ganga Path (northeast of Freak Street). Nepali yuppie hangout, serving pizza, momo, ice cream, etc. Inexpensive. B.K.'s Place , Thamel North. Stand-up snack bar serving chips and other takeaway food. Cheap. Delicatessen Center , Kantipath. An eye-popping cornucopia of deli meats, cheeses, breads, pastries, salads and fixings. Inexpensive to moderate. Festive Fare , Makhan Tol. Good Nepali and Newari food with an excellent rooftop view of the Taleju end of Durbar Square. Moderate (though the set menu is expensive). The Gourmet , Thamel (inside Old Vienna). Spotless German deli, serving authentic wurst and pate. Inexpensive. Hot Breads , Thamel. A bakery/cafe with big-time people-watching from a terrace overlooking the main Thamel intersection. Le Bistro, next door, has the same view and a greater range of food. Inexpensive. Just Juice & Shakes (aka JJ's ), Thamel Northwest. Smoothies, shakes and fresh juice, all reliable. Also coffee and pastries. Cheap. Mike's Breakfast , Naksal. Absolute bliss for breakfast - garden tables, classical music and spot-on food. Americans' eyes will mist over at the huevos rancheros, waffles and fresh coffee. Moderate. Northfields Cafe , Thamel Northwest. A somewhat less accomplished Thamel version of Mike's. Inexpensive to moderate. Oasis Garden , Freak Street. Probably the most pleasant breakfast/lunch spot in this area, with indoor and outdoor seating. Cheap to inexpensive. Pumpernickel Bakery , Thamel. A sort of Mecca for skinflints. Immensely popular for croissant sandwiches and sticky buns, with seating in a pleasant garden out back. Queuing for food is a drag, though. Cheap. Weizen Bakery , J.P. School Road. A spin-off of Pumpernickel - similar offerings, less of a scrum. Cheap to inexpensive.
