Indian
Perhaps the best measure of the Indian population in Kathmandu is the number of Indian restaurants - they're everywhere. The more expensive ones serve food every bit as good as you'll find in India, and it comes with ghazal and five-star service. Even the cheapies (mostly around New Road) do some fine pure vegetarian dishes. Annapurna , Thamel Northeast. Excellent, unpretentious tandoori diner - the real deal. Inexpensive. Ghar-e-Kebab , Durbar Marg in front of Hotel de l'Annapurna (tel 221711). Superlative North Indian food, ghazal, strange nightclub interior. Expensive. Mangalore Coffee House , corner of Jamal and Durbar Marg, near American Express. Great South Indian vegetarian food in an efficient upstairs canteen - authentic, right down to the toilets. Cheap. Moti Mahal , Durbar Marg next to Tansen. Tandoori food rivalling that of the expensive places, though the decor isn't as swanky. Godavari is a sister all-vegetarian restaurant. Moderate. Pilgrim's Feed 'n Read , just north of the Kathmandu Guest House, Thamel Northwest. Pretty good South Indian and tandoori entrees (also Tibetan food and a good range of sandwiches and burgers for lunch). Inexpensive. Shere Punjab , off New Road. Basic in-and-out Punjabi canteen. Cheap to inexpensive. Tansen , Durbar Marg (tel 224707). Top-notch tandoori and other Indian dishes served on burnished copper in minimalist surroundings. Expensive. Third Eye , J.P. School Road (tel 260478). The food is overrated - the main reason to come here is for the retro-1970s "Rice Terrace" room in back. Moderate. Tripti , J.P. School Road. Lively little pure vegetarian place serving north and South Indian fare. Cheap.
