Kathmandu Tibetan and Chinese

Tibetan and Chinese

Tibetan restaurants offer some of the cheapest tourist food in Kathmandu; cheaper still are the many momo kitchens throughout the old city, notably around Mahabaudha .

The Tibetan places usually do some Chinese dishes as well. Proper Chinese restaurants tend to be more expensive, especially the better ones in deluxe hotels like the Malla.

Da Hua , Bhagwan Bahal. Good all-round Chinese. Inexpensive.

Lhasa , Thamel Northwest, next door to Equator Exhibitions. Excellent Tibetan soups, momo and tongba (do-it-yourself millet beer). Cheap to inexpensive.

Mountain City , in the Hotel Malla on Lekhnath Marg. Delicious Chinese food; Szechuan a speciality. Moderate.

Nanglo , Ganga Path (northeast of Freak Street). Passable Chinese food. Inexpensive to moderate.

Omei , Jyatha Thamel. Convincing Beijing and Cantonese cuisine on white linen. Moderate.

Solu , Jyatha Thamel. A

Sherpa locals' hole-in-the-wall. Cheap.

Tashi Deleg/New Mandarin , Freak Street. Cramped but cosy, and good for both Chinese and Tibetan dishes. Cheap.

Utse , Jyatha Thamel. An old standard, in the hotel of the same name, with reliable and reasonably priced Tibetan and Chinese food. Cheap to inexpensive.

Yak , Kwa Bahal. Good value for standard Tibetan offerings (including butter tea and tongba), plus a fair range of Indian dishes. Cheap.
