The Hanumante Khola is Bhaktapur's humble tributary of the River Ganga, its name deriving from the monkey god Hanuman who, locals like to think, stopped here for a drink on his way back from the Himalaya after gathering medicinal herbs to heal Ram's brother in an episode of the Ramayan. Like all rivers in the valley, it's pretty disgusting, and doesn't exactly present Bhaktapur's best face, but several interesting bathing and cremation ghats flank the river as it curls along the city's southern edge. Unfortunately there's no riverside path connecting them.
