Walk westwards from the Janaki Mandir to the highway and you reach Ramanand Chowk , the nucleus of many of Janakpur's kuti and a major sadhu gathering place during festivals. A four-way arch bearing a statue of Guru Ramananda, the saint responsible for Janakpur's modern fame, is gradually being constructed over the intersection that bears his name. Two well-known establishments, Ramanand Ashram and Ratnasagar Kuti - the latter, rising grandly in the midst of farmland, looking uncannily like a Russian Orthodox church - are located west of here, but like most kuti, they are closed to non-Hindus, whose presence would necessitate all sorts of ritual cleansing.
