The Tarai is full of great little villages, and Janakpur makes a particularly good base for visiting them. The holy city's traditionalism extends into the surrounding countryside, which is inhabited by Hindu castes and members of the Tharu and Danuwar ethnic groups, and features some of the most meticulously kept farmland you'll see anywhere. You can ride the narrow-gauge railway east or west, or bike along several roads radiating out from the city. (Needless to say, winter is a much more comfortable time for biking.
