Two main roads link the Tarai with the hills east of the Sapt Koshi - the Dhankuta road , leaving the Mahendra Highway at Itahari, and the Ilam road , beginning at Charali. Bus services are more fickle on these than along the Mahendra Highway, but this is made up for by the availability of shared Land Rovers , which are faster than buses and don't cost much more. You won't be able to go too far before you start getting into what His Majesty's Government considers a trek, requiring a special permit obtainable only in Kathmandu or Kakarbhitta
