The west coast of the Malaysian Peninsula, from Kuala Lumpur north to the Thai border, is the most industrialized and densely populated part of the country. Chinese towns punctuate the route north, many of them founded on the tin economy, and this is also the area in which the British held most sway, attracted by the political prestige of controlling such a strategic trading region. Most visitors are too intent on the beckoning delights of Thailand to bother stopping at anything other than the major destinations, and there are plenty of ways to cross into Thailand , by boat, bus or train . You can get Thai visas in Georgetown , the vibrant and stimulating capital of the island of Penang , which rewards a few days' stay and is a magnet for travellers of all budgets. But before you leave Malaysia, you can chill out happily at the Cameron Highlands hill station, or sun yourself on the pretty white-sand shores of popular Pulau Langkawi , a large and increasingly upmarket island.
