BATU FERRINGHI , a thirty-minute bus ride west of Georgetown on Transitlink #202 or Transitlink air-con #93 (but not the standard #93), has a decent beach and several guesthouses, albeit filthy sea. The road runs more or less straight along the coast for 3km, on which all the hotels and restaurants are lined up side by side. The bus stops in the centre, where you'll find the Telekom office, post office, police station and clinic.

Towards the western end of Batu Ferringhi there's a small enclave of similar standard budget guesthouses facing the beach - take the road by the Guan Guan Cafe. Here you'll find the homely Ah Beng (tel 04/881 1036; $5-10), the spotless Baba's (tel 04/881 1686; $5-10), and the best place, Ali's (tel 04/881 1316; $5-10), has a relaxing open-air cafe and garden, and better rooms than most. The most popular of the expensive places is the grand Park Royal (tel 04/881 1133; $60-80), with lavish rooms and five-star restaurants.

Indian food at around RM15 per dish, while Oasis, on the main road, does Malay dishes from as little as RM3. On the beachfront, Restaurant Vibration has snacks and drinks and in the middle of the beach you'll find Eden Seafood Village, a huge place whose boast is "Anything that swims, we cook it." At the western end of the main strip, Happy Garden is set just off the road in a colourful flower garden and serves cheapish Chinese and Western food.
