Since many of the Cameron Highlands' walks start from nearby, the genteel town of TANAH RATA , the highlands' main development, is an ideal base. A couple of waterfalls and three reasonably high mountain peaks are all within hiking distance, and the town itself is festooned with white balustraded buildings, flowers and parks. It comprises little more than one street (officially called Jalan Pasar, but usually known as "Main Road"), the location of most hotels, banks and restaurants. Buses from Tapah terminate at the bus station about halfway along the main road, where you'll have to change for local buses to Brinchang and Kampung Raja, the furthest point north. CS Travel, Main Road (tel 05/491 1200), sells tickets for express buses from Tapah to all major destinations. You can collect poste restante at the post office on Main Road; the police station (tel 05/491 1222) is on Main Road, opposite the Garden Inn; the hospital is at the north end of Main Road (tel 05/491 1966), and there's a clinic at 48 Main Road (8.30am-12.30pm, 2-5.30pm & 8-10pm). There are a few Internet places behind Jalan Perisan Camellia; the best is Mix House Net at 76b.
