The south of the Malaysian Peninsula, below Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, has some of the most historically and culturally significant towns in the country. The west-coast city of Melaka , two hours by bus south from KL, still displays an interesting heritage of cultures from its Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists, not to mention its unique Chinese-Malay community of Peranakans. There's plenty to see here, and the city is also just a short boat ride from Sumatra . There's little to recommend Johor Bahru (or JB) at the tip of the Peninsula, save for its speedy transport links into Singapore, just across the causeway. It's also handy for heading a little way up the east coast to Pulau Tioman , a large island with several nice beaches, good diving opportunities and plenty of budget accommodation.
