The 560-kilometre-long Batang Rajang - batang (big river) rather than sungei, because of its great width and length - lies at the very heart of Sarawak. This is the world of isolated colonial forts, and of longboat trips to busy longhouse communities. Note that unlike the longhouses at Batang Ai, the communities here are not used to tourists. The best thing to do is to turn up and see what kind of reception you get. The chances are you'll be offered somewhere to stay. The express boat from Sibu (daily, at least hourly 5.30am-2.30pm; RM15) takes two-and-a-half to three hours to reach Kapit, stopping first at Kanowit and then at the little town of Song , from where Iban longhouses on the Katibas and Baleh tributaries become easily accessible.
