Boxed in between Sabah and Brunei, LAWAS TOWN sits on Sungei Lawas. There's little to see here, but it's an important transit point. Daily boats arrive here from Muara in Brunei, Sabah's Pulau Labuan and Limbang. There are also daily departures for these places ; tickets cost RM20. The jetty is beside the old mosque, 400m east of the town. A daily express bus from Kota Kinabalu calls in here via the Sabah border town of Sipitang and then goes on to Brunei's little-known Temburong District before terminating in Limbang. The fare from Kota Kinabalu is RM30. Lawas airport is around 3km south of town - a bus usually meets the daily flights from Kota Kinabalu, Limbang, Bario and Ba Kelalan. The MAS agent is Eng Huat Travel Agency, 455 Jl Law Siew Ann (tel 085/285570). The Mee Yan Hotel ($5-10), at the bottom of the town, offers adequate accommodation or you can go more upmarket and make for the Federal Hotel ($10-15) on Jalan Punang. For inexpensive food , try the upper floor of the market, where you can get delicious nasi kampur (daily 9am-4pm). Otherwise, most of the best eating places cluster around the Mee Yan Hotel. Lawas is online too: make for the Techno Train IT Centre, Lot 326, Bawah, Jalan Trusan.
