The small town of TENOM was once the bustling headquarters of the Interior District of British North Borneo, but today it's a peaceful backwater that's best-known for the impressive train journey to Beaufort (2hr 30min). Three types of train ply the Tenom-Beaufort route daily - diesel (Mon-Sat 7.30am & 1.40pm; Sun 7.55am, 12.10pm & 3.05pm; RM2.75); cargo (Mon-Sat 8am; RM2.75); and railcar (Mon-Sat 6.40am & 4pm, Sun 7.20am; RM8.35). The fastest and most comfortable of these is the railcar, but you must book ahead for this on 087/4735514 or at the station. Tenom Station is on the southern edge of the padang. Buses north to Keningau (RM5), from where you can continue on to KK, and south to Kuala Tomani (RM4), circle around Tenom all day long; you can pick one up on the main street, at the western edge of the padang. Shared taxis to Keningau also cost RM5 and leave from the main street. If friendly Hotel Kim San (tel 087/735485; $5-10) at the southwestern end of town is full, try the simpler Hotel Sabah (tel 087/735534; $5-10), off a side road by the market. Places to eat are plentiful, with a clutch of coffee shops and restaurants in the area around the Hotel Kim San.
