On the bumpy gravel road 47km southwest of Beaufort, SIPITANG is a sleepy seafront town worth bearing in mind if you need a place to stay en route to Sarawak. Approaching from the north, a bridge marks the start of town, and there's a jetty here from where a boat leaves for Labuan (daily 7am; RM20); 250m beyond that, you're in the town centre. Buses for Beaufort, KK and Lawas congregate in the centre of town; the taxi stand is next door. There's nothing much to do here except eat - try the Kami and the Rina, which occupy pretty west-facing positions on Brunei Bay or, across the main road, Restoran Bismillah, which does good curries. Of the hotels on the main road, the Hotel Asanol (tel 087/821506; $5-10) is the friendliest and most affordable. The easiest way to travel from Sipitang to Lawas in Sarawak is to take a minibus or taxi from the centre of town (both RM10; 1hr). The Lawas Express (RM6) passes through Sipitang (on its way from KK) at around 4pm and gets to Lawas after 5pm; or you can catch a RM2 minibus to Sindumin, on the Sabah side of the border, and then connect with a Sarawak bus. Whichever you choose, the driver will wait while you pass through the passport controls flanking the border - one in Sindumin, the other a couple of hundred metres away at Merapok in Sarawak
