The small town of RANAU sits on the south side of the main KK-Sandakan road, 20km from Kinabalu National Park, and is a handy stopping point if it's too late to travel the extra 19km to Poring. Minibuses stop at the eastern edge of town, on a patch of land beside Block A. At present, long-distance buses from KK to Sandakan stop briefly across town, on Jalan Kibarambang, also the site of Ranau's shared taxi stand, though they may both move to the minibus terminus. The best hotel is the quiet, six-room View Motel (tel 088/876445; $10-15) in Block L, but Hotel Ranau (tel 088/875661; $10-15), next to the Bank Bumiputra at the top of the square, is cheaper. There's internet access at Cyber Station, ground floor, Block B, Jalan Taman Ranau.
