The waters around tiny Pulau Sipadan , 30km south of Semporna in the Celebes Sea, teem with turtles, moray eels, sharks, barracuda, vast schools of tropical fish, and a huge diversity of coral. Not surprisingly, it's a mecca for divers. The diving highlights include a network of marine caves, White-tip Avenue and Barracuda Point and Hanging Gardens of soft coral. Snorkellers accompanying divers to the island can expect to see reef sharks and white-tips, lion fish, barracudas and scores of turtles, without having to leave the surface. The island itself is carpeted by lush forest, and fringed by white sand beaches, used by green turtles to lay their eggs. The only way to stay on Pulau Sipadan is by booking through a tour operator - all but one of the companies selling diving trips operate out of Kota Kinabalu , the exception being Pulau Sipadan Resort, which is based in Tawau . It is possible to make independent day-trips to the island: locals with boats (and snorkelling equipment) for rent are plentiful on the SOTC causeway in Semporna. Expect to pay around RM100 for the boat and RM80 for diving equipment.
