Long before you reach the entrance to the Batu Caves , you can see them ahead: small, black holes in the vast limestone hills, 13km north of the city centre. Since 1891, the caves have sheltered Hindu shrines, and today they're surrounded by shops selling religious paraphernalia. The caves are always packed with visitors, never more so than during the three-day Thaipusam festival held at the beginning of every year. To the left of the staircase up to the main Temple Cave, a small path strikes off to the Art Gallery (daily 8.30am-7pm; RM1), which contains dozens of striking multicoloured statues and murals, portraying scenes from the Hindu scriptures. At the top of the main staircase, Subramaniam Swamy Temple (daily 8am-7pm) is set deep in a huge cave, its walls lined with idols representing the six lives of Lord Subramaniam. To get to the caves, catch bus #11 from Central Market.
