Peninsular Malaysia's largest and most popular national park is TAMAN NEGARA , 250km northeast of KL. Numerous rewarding trails snake through some of the oldest rainforest in the world and there are resorts, hides and campsites to stay in. To see any sizeable mammal, including the resident elephants, you really have to make a three- or four-day trek, or journey upriver to remote Kuala Keniam. Staying overnight in the hides (tree houses beside salt licks) might give you sightings of mouse deer, tapir and wild ox - and the park has over three hundred species of birds. The busiest place in the park is Kuala Tahan , where you'll find most of the accommodation and the park headquarters. For a quieter experience, there's the more basic Nusa Camp , 2km upstream, and the upriver camps at Kuala Keniam and Kuala Trenggan . The best time to visit the park is between February and October, during the "dry" season, although it still rains even then. In the wet season (mid-Oct to Feb), there may be restrictions on the trails and boat trips.
