The Federation Of Malaya
Immediately after the war, the British updated the idea of a Malayan union - a position halfway towards full independence - which would make the Chinese and Indian inhabitants full citizens and give them equal rights with the Malays. This quickly aroused opposition among the Malays, with Malayan nationalists forming the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) in 1946. Its main tenet was that Malays should retain their special privileges, largely because they were the region's first inhabitants. The idea of union was subsequently replaced by the Federation of Malaya , established in 1948, which upheld the power of the sultans and brought all the regional groupings together under one government, with the exception of Chinese-dominated Singapore, whose inclusion would have led to the Malays being in a minority. Sarawak and North Borneo were made Crown Colonies of Britain.
