The Dutch In Melaka
Already the masters of Indonesia's valuable spice trade, the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), or Dutch East India Company, successfully laid seige to Melaka in 1641. Instead of ruling from above as their predecessors had tried to do, the Dutch ensured that each racial group was represented by a Kapitan, a respected figure from the community who mediated between his own people and the new administrators.
