The Portuguese Conquest Of Melaka
At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Portuguese set about gaining control of crucial Eastern ports. They attacked Melaka in 1511; Sultan Mahmud Shah fled and was replaced by a colonial administration of 800 Portuguese officers. Despite frequent attacks from upriver Malays, the Portuguese controlled Melaka for the next 130 years, during which period they built numerous churches and converted many locals to Catholicism.
