Srivijaya
The development of the Malay archipelago owed much to its location on the shipping route between India and China. The shipping trade flourished as early as the first century AD, introducing Hindu and Buddhist practices, along with wayang kulit (shadow plays), to the region. The calm channel of the Melaka Straits provided a refuge for ships which were forced to wait several months for a change in the monsoon winds, and from the fifth century onwards a succession of entrepots (storage ports) was created to cater for the needs of passing vessels. The mightiest of these entrepots was Srivijaya , whose empire was eminent from the beginning of the seventh century until the end of the thirteenth, eventually encompassing all the shores and islands surrounding the Straits of Melaka. Srivijaya itself (Palembang, in Sumatra) became an important centre for Mahayana Buddhism.
