Vehicle Rental
The condition of the roads in Peninsular Malaysia is generally excellent, making driving there a viable prospect for tourists, though not so in Sabah and Sarawak where the roads are rougher and susceptible to flash flooding. Malaysians drive on the left, and wearing seat belts in the front is compulsory. Malaysian drivers flash their headlights when they are claiming the right of way, not the other way around, as is common practice in the West. The speed limit is 110km/hr on highways, 90km/hr on trunk roads, and 50km/hr in built-up areas; speed traps are common and fines are RM200. Fuel costs just over RM1 (25p/38 sen) a litre. The North-South Highway is the only toll road - you can reckon on paying approximately RM1 for every 7km travelled. To rent a vehicle, you must be 23 or over and have held a clean driving licence for at least a year; a national driving licence should be sufficient. Avis, Budget, Hertz and National have offices in major towns and at the airports (book two days ahead). Rates start at RM165 (GBP42/US$68) per day or RM700 (GBP175/US$262) per week; local companies charge the same. Motorbike rental is more informal, usually offered by guesthouses and shops in touristy areas (RM20-30 per day). You may need to leave your passport as a deposit, but it's unlikely you'll have to show any proof of eligibility - officially you must be over 21 and have an appropriate driving licence. Wearing helmets is compulsory. Bicycles can be rented for about RM4 a day.
