The Orang Asli
The Orang Asli - the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia - mostly belong to three distinct groups, within which there are various tribes. Though most tribes retain some cultural traditions, government drives have encouraged many tribespeople to settle and work within the cash economy. The largest of the groups is the Senoi (pop. 40,000), who live in the forested interior of Perak, Pahang and Kelantan states, and divide into two main tribes, the Semiar and the Temiar. They follow animist customs and practise shifting cultivation. The dark-skinned, curly haired Semang (or Negritos; pop. 2000) live in the northern areas of the Peninsula and share a traditional nomadic, hunter-gatherer culture. The so-called Aboriginal Malays live south of the Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan road. This group includes the Jakun, who live around Tasek Chini, and the Semelais of Tasek Bera, both of which have retained their animist religion and artistic traditions and are among the easiest of the Orang Asli to approach, since some work in the two lakes' tourist industries.
