The Indians
The first large wave of Tamil labourers arrived in the nineteenth century to build the roads and railways and to work on the rubber estates. But an embryonic entrepreneurial class from north India soon followed and set up businesses in Penang; because most were Muslims, they found it easier to assimilate with the Malay community than the Hindu Tamils did. Although Indians comprise only ten percent of Malaysia's population their impact is felt everywhere. The festival of Deepavali is a national holiday, and Indians dominate certain professional areas like medicine and law. Despite this, in general Indians are second to the bottom of the economic ladder, higher only than the Orang Asli.
