The fast-expanding travellers' hangout of CHERATING , 47km north of Kuantan, hugs the northern end of a windswept bay, protected from the breeze by the shelter of a rocky cliff. Although most of the locals have long since moved to a small village further south, the settlement still tries to reflect kampung life. It's a good place in which to unwind, with a nightlife that comes as close as the east coast gets to raging. Cherating is ideal for windsurfing , and you can rent equipment for RM15 an hour. Clambering over the rocks at the eastern end of the bay brings you to a tiny secluded cove, though the beach isn't as good as that belonging to the exclusive Club Med over the next outcrop. Any express or local bus between Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan will drop you off at Cherating - tell the driver beforehand. Two rough tracks lead from the road down into the main part of the village, about five minutes' away, although the one nearest the bridge is the most direct. The main drag is a tiny surfaced road that runs roughly parallel to the beach, and this is where you'll find most of the restaurants and bars, as well as the provisions stores and Travel Post (tel 09/581 9825), which acts as a travel agency where you can book bus tickets for destinations in Malaysia and to Singapore, as well as local river and snorkelling trips (RM15 including equipment). They also have Internet terminals, an international fax line, and money changing services.
