The ragged little town of KUALA BESUT , 45km south of Kota Bharu, is the departure point for Pulau Perhentian. It's reached by taking bus #3 from Kota Bharu's local bus station to Pasir Puteh (every 15min; 1hr), and then bus #96 (every 30min; 30min) to Kuala Besut. Most guesthouses in Kota Bharu also organize share taxis (RM25) direct to Kuala Besut. There are no banks in Kuala Besut, or on the islands, so change money before you go. In season, many companies - most of them pretty unscrupulous - run boats from the Kuala Besut quayside, just behind the bus station (every 2hr; 9am-5pm; 1hr 30min). Morning departures are preferable, since the weather tends to be more reliable. Tickets (buy one on the boat) cost RM20 one-way, but don't get a return because it may well not be honoured by a rival boat taking you back. Boats stop at most of the jetties, but perhaps check with the skipper first.
