East Coast
The four-hundred-kilometre stretch from the northeastern corner of the Peninsula to Kuantan, roughly halfway down the east coast, is the most "Malay" region in Malaysia, with strong cultural traditions - particularly in Kota Bharu , the last major town before the Thai border, whose inhabitants still practise ancient Malay crafts such as kite-making and top-spinning. The casuarina-fringed beaches and coral reefs on two of the most beautiful islands in the South China Sea, Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Kapas , are the greatest attraction, but there are some appealing places on the mainland too, not least the laid-back backpackers' resort of Cherating , and Rantau Abang , one of only five places in the world where giant leatherback turtles come to nest between May and September. Many of the east-coast islands are virtually out of bounds between November and February because of the annual monsoon.
