Route 9 cuts east from Savannakhet through a series of drab towns, ultimately forming the link between Thailand and Vietnam. The road ends its Lao journey at the Lao Bao pass, the primary land crossing between Vietnam and Laos, before heading on to Dong Ha, where it connects with Vietnam's Highway 1. The Thais have recently shown an interest in Route 9 as a possible trade corridor across to the Vietnamese port of Da Nang, but for the moment the road is still a bumpy track, deteriorating daily under the weight of Vietnamese and Lao trucks.
