Tourists journeying through central Laos to the south usually keep to Route 13, which hugs the river, skipping Pakxan and stopping only for a night in Thakhek. However, the area to the east of Route 13 gives you access to one of two border crossings into Vietnam. The road splits at BAN VIANG KHAM , 88km south of Pakxan: Route 13 carries on south , but Route 8 strikes eastwards towards the Lak Xao-Vinh border crossing , tracing a centuries' old trading route to Vietnam and zigzagging through ruggedly beautiful, hilly countryside, punctuated by black-topped limestone pillars.
