Safety In Xiang Khouang Province
Occasional attacks by bandits have made it dangerous to travel in certain places in Xiang Khouang province, particularly in the area west of Muang Soui. They have been known to attack vehicles, and on one occasion in the mid-1990s even bombed a bus in downtown Phonsavan. Because of this situation, travelling west to Route 13 along Route 7 and south to Pakxan via Tha Thom is not recommended , nor are these routes plied by regular public transport. That said, hundreds of tourists visit the area each month without incident. Of more immediate danger are the mines , bombis and bombs littering the province. The Jar sites have been cleared of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), but there's no telling what the hard rains of the monsoon will unearth. The usual precautions apply .
