Bordered by Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, the far south conveniently divides into two regions, with Pakxe , the most important market town and the access point for the Chong Mek border crossing into Thailand , as the hub. In the west, the Mekong River corridor is scattered with dozens of ancient Khmer temples, including Wat Phou , the most impressive Angkorian ruin outside Cambodia, and the main tourist attraction in southern Laos. From the nearby town of Champasak , it makes sense to go with the flow of the river south to Si Phan Don , where the Mekong's 1993-kilometre-journey through Laos rushes to a thundering conclusion in a series of tiny riverine islands at the Cambodian border; the waters here are home to a dwindling number of very rare Irrawaddy dolphins . The border with Cambodia is currently only open to Lao and Cambodians. In the east of the region, the fertile highlands of the Bolaven Plateau separate the Mekong corridor from the Annamite Mountains that form Laos's border with Vietnam. Much of the area east of the Mekong lies off the beaten track and involves long and gruelling journeys on hard wooden seats along bumpy roads. One city well worth making the effort for is Attapu , known as the garden city for its pleasant atmosphere and undemanding pace.
