The northern districts of Tokyo are where you'll find the city at its most traditional, harking back to a world before the bright lights and high-tech commercialism of Ginza and Shinjuku. Nowhere is this more obvious than among the craftshops and neighbourhood restaurants of Asakusa , a must on any visit to Tokyo, and in the constant festival atmosphere around its magnificent temple, Senso-ji . East of Asakusa, Ueno is best known for its park and museums, including the flagship Tokyo National Museum, offering a comprehensive romp through Japanese art history. The Yamanote line loops east from Ueno past Rikugi-en, a serene classical garden, and Sugamo, famous for its quirky, old-people's shopping street, before grinding into Ikebukuro . With its huge department stores and entertainment district, Ikebukuro is a downmarket version of Shinjuku and Shibuya. Despite its lack of sophistication, it's an area worth exploring - if only for its cheap accommodation and discount shops.
