Kanda , the region immediately north and west of Nihombashi, straddles Tokyo's crowded eastern lowlands - the former Shitamachi - and the more expansive western hills. The area's scattered sights reflect these contrasting styles, kicking off at Ochanomizu with historic Kanda Myojin, a lively Shinto shrine, and an austere monument to Confucius at Yushima Seido. Below them lie the frenetic, neon-lit streets of Akihabara , the "Electric City" dedicated to technological wizardry. Akihabara is also the jumping-off point for Ryogoku , the heartland of sumo and home to one of the city's most enjoyable museums, over on the east bank of the Sumida-gawa. Heading back westwards, Suidobashi has a couple of minor attractions in Tokyo's foremost baseball stadium and a classic seventeenth-century garden, while a studious hush prevails among the secondhand bookshops of Jimbocho , just to the south.
