The natural place to start exploring Tokyo is the Imperial Palace , home to the emperor and his family, and the city's geographical and spiritual heart. Well hidden behind the old castle's massive stone ramparts and a wall of trees, the palace itself is off limits, but parts of its grounds have been hived off as public parks, providing a green lung for the city centre. Most attractive of these is Higashi Gyoen , site of the castle's main keep, while to its north Kitanomaru-koen has a mixed collection of museums and makes a pleasant approach to Japan's most controversial shrine, Yasukuni-jinja .
