The western side of Kochi-ken has some of Shikoku's best scenery, either inland beside the Shimanto-gawa or along the rugged coast, washed by the savage current of the Pacific Ocean. Here there are several fishing villages from where you can take whale-watching tours . The rocky cape at Ashizuri Misaki , 180km southwest of Kochi, with its twisting scenic roads, temple and lush foliage, is well worth the journey. Continue around the coast and you'll reach Tatsukushi , where outlandish rock formations stretch out towards the coral reefs under the ocean, and Sukumo , a recommended spot for scuba diving and jumping-off point for the undeveloped islands of Okino-shima and Uguru-shima.
