Eating and Drinking
Not surprisingly for a port, Uwajima offers ample opportunity to eat fresh fish - two popular dishes are tai-meshi (marinated sea bream on top of rice) and satsuma-jiru (minced fish and miso paste on rice). There are several good restaurants close by the JR station, but none of the usual fast-food outlets; your best bet for a quick snack is either the Willie Winkie bakery at the station or the Scratch Bakery Craft on the way to the Taga-jinja. For a beer , or something stronger, you could try Gaiya , east of the Gintengai, a modern izakaya , painted bright yellow outside and serving a good range of seafood, vegetable and meat dishes. Just beyond the southern end of the arcade, Van (closed Thurs), with its collection of Meissen pottery, is the sophisticated option, serves good food and is also open for lunch. The nearby Red Boots (closed Mon) has more a Wild West vibe and very genki management. You're guaranteed to run into someone from the expat community and plenty of lively Japanese at Texas Bar on the main road three blocks west of the station; it's run by Seiji, a hefty judo black belt.
