Arrival and Information
Uwajima Station is the train terminus for both the JR Yodo line running from Kubokawa and the JR Yosan line from Matsuyama. Buses stop in front of the station as well as at the main bus centre at the foot of the castle hill on Route 56. Uwajima is also connected by a daily ferry to Beppu in Kyushu; the port is around twenty minutes' walk west of the city centre. Just south of the exit to the JR station, on the wide, palm-lined avenue, is an information centre (Mon-Sat 8.30am-5pm, Sun 9am-5pm; tel 0895/22-3934), where you can pick up a good English-language map and booklet of the town. The assistants speak English and there's free Internet access (checking mail only). If you wish to send emails, the best place to head is C@fe Upstairs , in the Gintengai , which charges Y350 for thirty minutes; it's run by a friendly English bloke, Andrew, and his English-speaking wife, Fujiko. They've also created a useful Web site ( www.nanyo.net ) with lots of information in English about the area and links to other sites. You can change money at Iyo Bank in just off the Gintengai, and there's a cash machine at the main post office near the Kori Gate to the castle.
