Arrival and Information
Trains from Takamatsu via the Kotoku line, and from Kochi via the Dosan and Tokushima lines, pull in at Tokushima Station, next to the Clement Plaza shopping centre, at the head of Shinmachibashi-dori, the main thoroughfare. Tokushima's airport (tel 088/623-5111) lies 8km north of the city centre, and a bus from here to the terminal, in front of Clement Plaza, takes 25 minutes and costs Y430. There's a ferry from Wakayama (Y2420) to Okinosu port, 3km east of the centre, and fifteen minutes by bus from Clement Plaza. From Kansai International Airport there's now a direct bus via Awaji-shima (Y4000), as well as buses from Maiko, on the Honshu side of the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi. Buses for around the city and further afield arrive and depart from the terminal outside Clement Plaza; there's an information office to help you find the right platform. The city's sights are all within easy walking distance of here. For information on the city and prefecture, the best place to head is the Tokushima Prefecture International Exchange Association (TOPIA), on the sixth floor of Clement Plaza (daily 10am-6pm; tel 088/656-3303, www.tk2.nmt.ne.jp/~topia ). Staff here are helpful and speak English, there's a small library of English books and magazines, as well as information on other parts of Japan and Internet access. Offering a similar service, as well as Japanese classes, is the Tokushima International Association (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm; tel 088/622-6066), one block beyond the city hall to the east of the JR station.
