Takamatsu Arrival and Information

Arrival and Information

The JR train station is at the northern, seaside end of the central thoroughfare, Chuo-dori, and ten minutes' walk from the heart of the city. Several direct trains arrive daily from Kochi, Matsuyama, Okayama and Tokushima, and there's an overnight service to Tokyo. Long-distance and most local buses pull in nearby, at the north end of Chuo-dori. High-speed boats from Osaka, Kobe (both 2 daily; Y6100) and Shodo-shima dock at the Prefectural Pier, five minutes' walk east of the train station; ferries from Shodo-shima and Nao-shima, at the pier a couple of minutes further east. Ferries from Kobe arrive at the main port complex, fifteen minutes to the east by free shuttle bus. Note some of this will change as the Sunport development comes on line. Takamatsu airport (tel 087/835-8110) lies 16km south of the town centre, 35 minutes away by bus (Y740) or taxi (Y4000).

The new tourist information office (daily 9am-5pm; tel 087/851-2009), on the west side of the plaza outside the train station, usually has someone who can speak English, and provides useful free maps and booklets on the area. Alternatively, pay a visit to the Kagawa International Exchange Centre , better known as I-PAL, at 1-11-63 Bancho (Tues-Sun 9am-6pm; tel 087/837-5901). This is an excellent facility with a library of foreign-language books, magazines and newspapers from around the world,

free use (for 30min) of an Internet terminal, and a TV lounge where you can catch up on the CNN news. It's also a good place to meet Japanese who speak English and foreigners who live in town, and you can pick up the free information sheets Kagawa Journal and Takamatsu Information Board (TIA), which carry details of what's on in town. From the JR station, I-PAL is a twenty-minute walk down Chuo-dori to the crossing with Central Park - turn right and I-PAL is just on the left.
