Matsuyama is also well served with places to drink . The tight grid of streets between Niban-cho and Sanban-cho in the centre is heaving with bars and, in the summer, beer gardens sprout on the roofs of the ANA, Chataeutel and Sunroute hotels. Standard beer and nibbles joints include a branch of the nationwide Kirin City , close to Kinokuniya bookstore, and Munchen , a German style beerhall, serving Sapporo beer. Many of the bars in Dogo are pricey hostess joints and best avoided. The cinemas on and around the Okaido arcade show mainstream Hollywood and Japanese movies, while you can usually catch independent foreign films at Cinema Lunatic (tel 089/933-9230), south of the city centre, close to the Tachibana-bashi across the river Ishite-gawa. Theatre, dance and orchestral performances are held at the Matsuyama City Hall (tel 089/921-8222) and the Prefectural Cultural Centre (Kenmin Bunka Kaikan) (tel 089/923-5111).
