Eating and Drinking
Matsuyama is undoubtedly the best place for eating in Shikoku, with a wide range of restaurants, cafes and bars. You'll come across a number of local foods - all worth trying - including the sponge roly-poly cake called taruto , inspired by a Portuguese confection introduced to Japan 350 years ago through the port of Nagasaki; the three-coloured rice dumplings on sticks called Botchan dango , after the character's favourite sweet; and goshiki somen , thin noodles made in five colours. There are also plenty of fast-food options in the city centre along the shopping arcades, including KFC, McDonald's, Mister Donuts and a branch of the cheap coffee shop Doutor on Gintengai.
