Getting Around
Matsuyama's city centre is easily covered on foot, but to travel between here and Dogo you'll almost certainly use the tram network. There are five tram routes: numbers 1 and 2 are loop lines, the first running clockwise from the Shi-eki-mae terminus around Katsuyama, the second running anticlockwise along the same route; numbers 3, 5 and 6 all run through the city centre at Ichiban-cho, past the castle, ending at the delightfully old-fashioned Dogo terminal. Fares are a flat Y170 and must be paid to the driver on leaving the tram. A day pass is Y450, but can only be bought from the ticket offices at Otemachi (a 5min walk east from the JR station), Shi-eki and the Dogo terminus. Alternatively, you can buy pre-paid travel cards for Y1000 (worth Y1100 in value) from vending machines on the trams. These are inserted into the machine beside the driver as you exit, and the fare deducted from the total. The travel cards can also be used on the city buses. Matsuyama's buses are best used for reaching further-flung areas of the city, such as the airport and Oku Dogo. Apart from the castle hill, Matsuyama is reasonably flat, making this a good city to cycle in, although you'll need to keep an eye out for trams on the main roads.
