Eating and Drinking
The best advice for lunch in Kotohira is to pack a picnic and enjoy it with the view from Kompira-san. You can stock up on supplies at Shinpu-da , a bakery on the route from the JR station to the shrine, serving rolls, sandwiches and cakes. The ryokan-lined approach to the shrine also has several tourist restaurants, many with stout ladies outside shouting the praises of the food inside. Try Konpira Udon , where the speciality is shoyu udon , thick noodles topped with dried fish flakes and bits of tempura batter - you add your own soy sauce - for Y500 a bowl. Closer to the shopping arcade, on the corner beside the bridge, is the New Green , a quirkily decorated cafe which serves both Japanese and Western food and does good-value set menus for Y700. For a more traditional setting, try Tako Sushi , easily spotted on the main shopping street by the large red octopus ( tako ) above the door. Apart from sushi (a set plate costs Y800), the restaurant also does the usual noodle dishes. Also worth a look is the Kotohira Bakushukobo Murasaki , a modern izakaya that serves the local ji-biru Konpira Beer - it's about the liveliest place in town in the evenings.
