Restaurants & Bars

The best place to look for restaurants is in the streets immediately inland from the harbour, particularly Nishizato-dori which runs parallel to the main road, Highway 390, but two blocks west.

A Dish . The menu changes daily at this stylish and relaxed restaurant 500m south of the ferry terminal. Good pasta and fine thin-crust pizza as well as local dishes given a contemporary spin. Tues-Sun 6pm-midnight, Sun 5pm-11pm.

Bar Alchemist . After finishing your meal at A Dish , nip upstairs to this convivial bar, decorated with a telescope, piano and world globe. The master organizes live events twice a month including folk and classical music and poetry readings, when there's a Y2000 cover charge.

Banana Kitchen . Occupying a prominent position where the ferry terminal road meets Makuramu-dori, this spick-and-span shokudo serves up bargain Y500 set meals, including local dishes such as papaya chanpuru . Daily 11am-11pm.

Chuzan , Makuramu-dori. Authentic izakaya , specializing in fish and sushi as well as what they call "ethnic" food. A meal shouldn't cost more than Y1000. Daily 4pm-midnight.

Gaka Goya . Bar and live house east off Ichiba-dori from opposite Hotel Sail Inn . The master is a friendly English-speaking chap and this is your best chance of catching decent live music in town. Y1000 cover charge. Daily except Wed from 9.30pm.

Jammin' . Hirara's obligatory reggae bar, a short stroll away from the west end of Nishizato-dori, is a cut above average, conjuring an appropriate tropical vibe. Offers Internet access as well as decent food, such as spicy jack chicken for Y800. The masters' partner Yamada Yuko is also a diving

instructor ( yuko02@hotmail.com ). Daily 8pm-3am.

Kushiya . You'll find this rustic yakitori-ya just off the west end of Makuramu-dori; they charge from Y130 for a stick of grilled chicken. Beer is cheap at Y500 and you can take your pick from seats or a tatami area. Mon-Sat 6pm-midnight.

Nomura , 309 Nishizato-dori. Rather plastic decor, but offers a good range of set menus including tempura for Y1500 and giant prawns for Y2500. Daily 11am-11pm.
