North of Sendai, Honshu's coastal plain gives way to a fractured shoreline of deep bays and knobbly peninsulas. The first of these is the Oshika Hanto , a rugged spine on the eastern edge of Sendai Bay, whose broken tip forms Kinkazan . This tiny island has been a sacred place since ancient times but its prime attractions these days are its isolation and hiking trails through forests inhabited by semi-wild deer and monkeys. The main gateway to the area is Ishinomaki , from where buses run down the peninsula to Ayukawa , a former whaling port with a moderately interesting museum and connecting ferries to Kinkazan. Many tourist facilities close in winter (Nov-March), so check the schedules first at the information offices in Sendai or Matsushima and ask them to help with booking accommodation.
